Rava Vada (Indian Savoury Donut with Semolina)

You all have noticed that I love south Indian cuisine very much. I often make different types of dosas and chicken dishes frequently, of which I have shared some recipe and will be sharing some in future too. My today’s post, Rava Vada is an instant vada which is very light and crisp and full of flavour. Best part is it can be prepared with everyday ingredients. Here is the recipe. Ingredients for vada:

  • Rava or Suji or Semolina – 200 gms
  • Curd – ½ cup
  • Onion – 1 (Medium-finely chopped)
  • Green Chilli – 2 (Finely chopped)
  • Ginger – ½ tsp (Finely chopped)
  • Curry Leaves – 1 sprig (Chopped)
  • Coriander Leaf – 3 Tbsp (Finely chopped)
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – For deep frying

Ingredients for green coconut chutney:

  • Scraped Coconut – ½ cup
  • Roasted Peanut – A handful
  • Lemon Juice – ½ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Chopped Coriander – A handful
  • Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
  • Green Chilli – 1-2 nos


  1. Take a big mixing bowl and mix all ingredients together. Keep aside for 20-25 minutes.
  2. Grease you hands with some oil. Take a tennis ball size vada mix. Make round ball shape.
  3. Keep on your palm and press a little to make a vada. Make a whole in the middle of it.
  4. Meanwhile heat sufficient oil in a wok or kadai.
  5. Carefully release the vadas in hot oil. Fry until light brown and crisp on both sides. Keep the heat on medium low.
  6. Take out on a absorbent paper and serve hot with green/red/white coconut chutney.
  7. For making the green coconut chutney gring everything together in a grinder and serve immediately.
  8. If you wish, you may store this chutney for couple of days if you store in a airtight glass container.
