Bahari Begun (Eggplant with Sesame and Poppy Seed Paste)

‘Bahari Begun’ is a very easy and quick recipe which I have learned from a post of Chhanda Mitra in one of the food group. Credit goes to her for sharing such a tasty recipe…. Though I have modified the recipe a little depending on my taste and named it as ‘Bahari Begun’. It turned out so nice that I thought of sharing this recipe with you!

The ingredients that I have used are easily available and goodness of this recipe is, it can be cooked in very few minutes. So, here is the recipe of ‘Bahari Begun’.

1 Eggplant – Small (cut into 4 pieces)
2 tsps White Sesame Seed
3 tsps Poppy Seed
1 tsp White Mustard Seed
3 Green Chilies
2 Tbsps Grated Coconut
½ tsp Sugar
1 pinch Turmeric Powder
½ cup Mustard Oil
To taste Salt


  1. Grind sesame seeds, poppy seeds, mustard seeds, coconut and green chillies into a paste.
  2. Marinate the eggplant with turmeric powder, salt and keep aside for 15 minutes. Heat oil in a nonstick pan and shallow fry the eggplant pieces and put on a paper towel. If you wish you can deep fry as well.
  3. Now add the masala paste in oil.
  4. Add turmeric powder, sugar and adjust salt. Fry till the masala dries up.
  5. Arrange the fried eggplants on a serving plate. Now spread the fried masala or sauce on top of the fried eggplants.
  6. Serve hot with roti or paratha.
